Church Renovation Underway

The South Yarmouth United Methodist Church has broken ground for the start of its renovation project to bring the historic building up to current architectural standards.  The first step to upgrade the 160-year-old foundation was started on Monday with earth-moving equipment at work around the exterior of the church on Old Main Street.  The Church Building Committee has been investigating the scope of the project for more than a year. The work has been made possible by a $266,000 Community Preservation Grant from the Town of Yarmouth, $125,000 from Church funding, and in-kind design and engineering services amounting to approximately $50,000.

The Committee held a ceremony following the church service on Sunday, February 2nd to symbolize the start of the construction project by turning over shovelfuls of dirt in front of the church.  Pictured above are Committee members (l. to r.): Don Ellicott, Richard Barker, Barbara Dunbar, Dusty Barley, Howard Heaton, Project Engineer David Dovell, Pastor David Hoyt, Richard Snelley.
The construction is expected to continue until May during which time Sunday worship will be held at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod across the street from the church at #307 Old Main Street at 10 a.m. throughout the first phase of the construction period.

CHURCH RENOVATION CONTINUES
(March 6, 2014)
In spite of a cold and snowy month of February, the historic South Yarmouth United Methodist Church building has been supported and stabilized with steel beams.  The basement, dating from 1850, has been excavated, footings have been poured and forms for new cement basement walls are in place.
Remnants of temporary beams and supports were found in the excavated fill along with newspaper accounts from the 1890s reporting on church activities of the day.  Work will continue with the new foundation walls, the installation of a fire suppression system, and new electrical and plumbing components.

FOR WEEKDAY CHURCH BUSINESS, please use the town parking lot across the street or the lot behind the church (in front of the Thrift Shop barn).  The church parking lot is closed except for two handicapped spaces directly in front of the office.
