“For where two or three are gathered in my name,
I am there among them.”
  (Matthew 18:20)

In the early fall every member and friend of South Yarmouth United Methodist Church will be receiving an invitation to attend a house meeting.  These meetings are being organized by leaders of SYUMC and Pastor John.  There are a number of reasons why meetings like this can be valuable.  First, they will provide Pastor John with an opportunity to meet, in an informal setting, a large cross section of the membership of SYUMC in a relatively short period of time.   These meetings, of course, will also enable the members of the congregation to get to know Pastor John – and one another – better.

Secondly, these meetings will provide an important time for all of us to listen; to listen in a way that will help us better hear the Spirit’s guidance as we consider our future life and ministry together.  The “heart” of each meeting will be an opportunity to reflect upon our answers to a few questions; about our congregation, our community, and Cape Cod.  The thoughts and stories that are shared, when placed alongside the gospels, will help guide us as we move into the future to which God is calling us.

Finally, these meetings are fun!  It will simply be a treat to be together, in a relatively small group, enjoying each other’s company, as well as the gracious hospitality of different members of the congregation hosting these meetings. Each gathering will have about ten people and will be offered at different times during the week; some during the day, others in the early evening; some on a week-day and others on a weekend, in the hopes of accommodating everyone’s schedule.

More information will follow in the next issue of The Steeple, but please be sure to respond to the invitation when it comes and make every effort to attend one of these gatherings.

“The first duty of love is to listen.”
